Backes goes boom. US leads 3-1. Ryan Suter rips a shot purposefully wide, gets the lively bounce off the backboards, and Backes is there to slip it home. (Meantime, the tables are turned from 20 mins ago... Canada and lil Latvia now tied 1-1. Cardiologists on call across the Great White North.)

Intermission reality check: If the US plays a period like that vs Canada (or Sweden or Finland) they'll see the scoreline flipped. This is a puck-moving d-man's tournament, so Cam Fowler, Paul Martin, that's your music playing... (The chip 'n' chase game is a non-starter on this big ice surface) /Hockeyese
